LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School golfer Makoa Chong fired an impressive 77 in the windy conditions on Saturday at the Ocean Course at Hokuala golf course during the latest Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf match.
“The day started off as a nice sunny afternoon at Hokuala with a light breeze that rapidly turned into a nice strong wind,” said Paul Ito, who is the father of Kaua‘i High School golfer Sydney Ito. “The course got tough. The greens were still firm and fast following the University of Hawai‘i golf Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational that was played there last weekend.”
Chong’s high score for the boys golf team was strong enough to give the Warriors the win with a total 332, more than 30 strokes ahead of Kaua‘i High School that finished with a team total 366. Waimea High School finished in third place with a team total 375.
Island School was unable to field enough golfers for a team and finished with no score.
“A number of kids were off-island on spring break so not all the teams were at their full strength,” Ito said. “But Kapa‘a’s boys team certainly was, and was led by a very impressive 77 shot by Makoa Chong in the difficult conditions.”
Chong captured top boys individualist honor with his 77. That was three strokes better than his teammate Jayvin Raquel, who ended the day at 80.
Island School golfers filled in the remaining top 5 boys spots, as Lucas Summerhays ended a stroke back of Raquel at 81, Voyager Christopher Jobe finished with an 82 and Garrett Hadley ended with an 83.
The Kaua‘i High School girls team, led by the high score of 100 carded by Amalia Abigania, was the only girls team to qualify for team scoring at a total of 325.
Abigania captured top girls individualist honors, followed by Kapa‘a’s Juliette O’Shaughnessy finishing at 101.
Kaua‘i’s Sydney Ito finished with a 108 to fill in the third berth of the girls. She was followed by Via Javinar at 117 and Kapa‘a’s Mehana Guy, who finished with a 118 for the fifth spot.
KIF golf continues on Saturday, when the golfers tee off at the Princeville Makai Golf Course. The first group leaves the first tee starting at noon.
