LIHU‘E — After splitting its twin bill against Kapa‘a to open the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation baseball season last week, Kaua‘i took both ends of a Saturday doubleheader against Waimea High School to take the lead in the KIF baseball standings with three wins, and a loss.

Waimea, who suffered the 7-1 and 4-2 losses at the hands of the Red Raiders on Saturday, falls to one win and two losses after claiming the bottom of the seventh squeaker against Kapa‘a on Wednesday that came on a two-RBI bang from Menehune Evan Yamauchi.
Entering Saturday with a 1-1 record, Kaua‘i pushed four of its seven runs in the first inning on two hits, including a three-bagger by Zeke Bukoshi.
Waimea set the stage with a run by Jeyden Moises, who singled to rightfield to get things rolling.
Kaua‘i, in addition to the four runs on two hits in the first frame, added two more runs in the second and another run in the third.
The second contest saw Kaua‘i jump onto the scoreboard early after pushing two runs home, one scoring on a passed ball and the other coming home via Bukoshi’s whack.
Waimea, the victim of a drawn out discussion following a batter hitting out of order, was finally able to get two runs lit up as the Yamauchi twins, Nobu and Niko, were plated home in the fourth frame to answer a 3-0 Red Raider lead.
Kaua‘i pulled ahead for good in the fifth inning when Bukoski, getting first on a walk, and advancing on a passed ball, went on to score Kaua‘i’s final run in the 4-2 win.
The next KIF baseball game will take place on Wednesday when Kapa‘a High School visits Kaua‘i High School at Vidinha Stadium. The junior varsity is scheduled for a two hour time limit contest starting at 3:30 p.m. The varsity contest is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
