PO‘IPU — A Kalaheo man was taken into custody on Sunday morning, about two hours after an alleged hit-and-run that left two teenage girls in critical condition.
PO‘IPU — A Kalaheo man was taken into custody on Sunday morning, about two hours after an alleged hit-and-run that left two teenage girls in critical condition.
The incident happened around 9:40 p.m. on Saturday evening, at which time Kaua‘i Police Department officers responded to a report of a traffic crash on Po‘ipu Road in front of Po‘ipu Beach Athletic Club.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that the motorist, 25-year-old Noah Alejandro, was operating a pickup truck traveling eastbound on Po‘ipu Road when he struck the victims crossing the road,” the police department said in a statement on Monday.
“Alejandro fled the scene and abandoned the vehicle in a hotel parking lot. He turned himself in to KPD at approximately 12:06 a.m. on Sunday morning.”
The victims, a 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl who were visitors, were taken to Wilcox Medical Center in Lihu‘e. The girls were later medevaced to Queen’s Hospital on O‘ahu for further treatment. They were listed in critical condition.
Alejandro was booked on two counts of negligent injury in the first degree, being involved in an accidents involving serious bodily injury, inattention to driving, reckless driving and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
He was released pending further investigation.
The crash closed Po‘ipu Road in both directions for roughly three hours while the KPD Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
