LIHU‘E — Laurie Ho, of the Kaua‘i Association for Family and Community Education, said Shaylen Satta, a fourth grade student at the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School, was a dual winner during an announcement made at Wilcox School.
“Shaylen Satta’s essay and artwork regarding ‘caring’ was sent on to compete in the National CHARACTER COUNTS competition,” Ho said. “We’ll just wait to see what happens, next.”
According to Ho, Satta was a first place winner for the Kaua‘i AFCE competition and went on to win the HAFCE competition, each honor accompanied with a cash prize.
Ho also announced other KAFCE winners during a visit to Sata’s school on May 15.
Savannah Ballard earned second place for the KAFCE competition.
Jaden Swigart, whose mom is a teacher, earned third place honors at the KAFCE.
Honorable mention awards were also presented to Mahinalani Berg, Mahina Galvez, Stella Kwak and Alinarose Problacion.
CHARACTER COUNTS is housed at The Robert D. and Billie Ray Center at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. As a global initiative that transforms lives and strengthens communities, CHARACTER COUNTS supports the mission to improve civility through character development and ethical leadership.
The Six Pillars of Character are the core ethical values of CHARACTER COUNTS. These are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
The Hawai‘i Association for Family and Community Education is located on the islands of Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, and Hawai‘i. A nonprofit volunteer organization, HAFCE is focused on the family with workshops in health, home, community and environment, international, leadership, and youth education.
