LIHU‘E — Paced by Kaua‘i High School runners Brennen Corregedore and Emma Burgess, the Red Raiders were propelled to Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation championship status on Saturday during the final KIF cross-country meet held at the Island School campus.
Running before a large crowd deserving of a championship meet, Corregedore set the pace for the 73-runner field by tripping the clocks at 17 minutes, 21.22 seconds in the boys’ race that followed the girls race. His performance triggered the remaining Red Raiders, who pushed six scoring runners across the finish line in the top 10 of the championship race.
Kaua‘i boys scored 24 points for the KIF title, followed by Island School Voyagers claiming second place on 69 points, just two points better than Waimea High School boys who settled at 71 points after its first runner, Isaac Funtanilla, tripped the clocks in 11th place, overall.
Kapa‘a High School, despite its first runner, Saxon Kimball, finishing second overall, had too much of a gap to close when its second runner, Azure Seals, finished ninth overall. The Warriors rounded out the scoring with 74 points.
Emma Burgess of the Red Raider girls team set the pace by breaking the 20-minute barrier in her 5,000 meter run. She stopped the clocks at 19:57.52 as the first Kaua‘i runner to cross the line, followed by fellow Raiders Kamaira Silva, who actually had the lead early in the race, and Aileah Villatora.
The Kaua‘i girls finished with 28 points, followed by the Kapa‘a High School girls securing second place on 39 points after its first runner, Gwyneth Adams, followed Villatora across the line at 22:30.78.
Waimea High School girls, demonstrating its progress in running together through the season, finished third with 58 points after its first runner, Canyon Niccore, crossed the line ninth, overall.
Island School girls, with two of its four runners finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, did not have enough runners to field a team score.
The 2022 Honolulu Marathon Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association cross-country championships take place on Saturday at the Island School course with a total of 200 runners in the boys race, and another 200 runners in the girls race, including 12 runners from the KIF in each race. The girls race is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. with the boys race starting at 9:15 a.m.
