LIHU‘E — One match was forfeited, and the Island School girls air riflery team, and the Kaua‘i High School boys team posted victories on Saturday as the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air riflery matches got underway following a long absence due to the COVID-19 shutdown.
Kapa‘a High School coaches said the Warrior teams were not prepared for competition and forfeited its showing against Waimea.
The forfeit did not stop the Menehune from honing their skills on the range as the boys team was led by Kylan Takakusagi who posted a 246-point showing after carding 93 points in the prone position, 74 points in the standing position, and 79 points in the kneeling position.
On the girls’ range, Lee Ann Saniatan finished as the top Menehune sharpshooter with a 222-point total (88-64-70).
Braden Viohl (92-64-78-234) from the Voyager men sported the top score at the Island School range against Kaua‘i High School. But, an insufficient number of qualifying marksmen, four versus five, gave the match to Kaua‘i High School who finished by posting 1087 points to the Voyagers’ 873 points.
Vincent Javinar (82-64-84-229) and Jordan Andres (84-58-87-229) shared the lead for the Red Raider men, their scores falling shy of the week’s top men shooters – Waimea’s Takakusagi, and Brysen Yanos (90-63-86-234).
The Kaua‘i High School girls fielded just three sharpshooters and dropped to the Voyager women who put four people on the line. Island School girls posted a 758-point total led by Dominica De Trolio (85-643-54-203) for the win against the 531-point showing by Kaua‘i High School who was led by Logan Lazaro posting a 220 (87-60-73).
The next air riflery matches take place from 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, when Kaua‘i High School hosts Waimea High School, and Island School hosts Kapa‘a at its Puhi campus range.
