Happy Boys Day, Kaua‘i!
Today is the fifth day of the fifth month, and used to be Boys Day until someone said we need to be more equitable and changed it to Children’s Day.
The only thing that stays the same is the koi, or carp, that are flying in Kapaia near the swinging bridge (kudos, Laraine Morishige and the Kapaia Foundation, on doing this in honor of the 600 residents who lived in the area back in the 1930s. When you visit (makes nice holiday card pictures!), just be mindful of the ‘aina.
And coming on the heels of that, Happy Mother’s Day to the Abela sisters from Kaua‘i Family Cafe (yes, they’re a Pau Hana Market regular at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e!), who will be partying at the Princeville night market Sunday from 4 p.m. after being asked to participate following a successful outing at the Koloa night market. Ava Celestine and A’Ryan Celestine of Oregon (yes, they shop at the Portland Saturday market and will go check out Peter Nelson and his new Kaua‘i coffee-table book!) were busy getting acquainted with the cascaron and the Stacy Pleas Monday-night pancit.
Happy Mother’s Day to Neill and Fely Sams of Orchid Alley in Kapa‘a (mahalo for that Alan Yamada specimen that has a fragrance of coconut!) and their helpers — Fely’s sister Dionisia Tuscano of California and Rotarian Jakki Nelson (doesn’t she do the bee-pollen thing at the Grove Farm Market, too?) of the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a — who will be going crazy with orders all the way to Sunday. And, Fely said, even past that for all those who couldn’t make it on time.
Happy Mother’s Day, Kaua‘i — you have until May 8 to take advantage of Kukui Grove’s May Shop and Dine promotion, where shoppers can turn in receipts for gift cards from any of the centers’ eating places.
