Kunio Hasegawa

Kunio Hasegawa passed away on Nov. 11, 2020, at the age of 89, in Lihu‘e. He was born on Nov. 1, 1931, on Kaua‘i. He was a veteran with the U.S. Army and also a tellyman and supervisor for AMFAC.

He was preceded in death by wife Eleanor Hasegawa.

He is survived by daughters Sharon Bernardino of ‘Ele‘ele, Lorna (Robert) Brun of Kalaheo and Blythe (Luke A. Simao) Hasegawa-Simao of Kalaheo, grandchildren Kai (Tani) Ishino, Randy (Cher) Brun, Brittney (Shane) Brun, Ross (Chanel) Brun, Breanne Brun and Luke A. (Kiaura Tabian) Simao Jr., great-grandchildren Orion and Emmett Ishino, Chyleisha and Laccey and Shayda Brun, brother Masao (Virginia Kumsin) Hasegawa of Kalaheo, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A walk-through and talk-story session is at Garden Island Mortuary on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a celebration of life at noon. Due to COVID-19, masks and 6-feet social distancing are required.

Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Rufo ‘Rufus’ Cardenas Jr.

Rufo “Rufus” Cardenas Jr., 64, of Kapahi, passed away at home on May 11, 2020. He was born in Lihu‘e on Aug. 26, 1955, and was the handyman and mechanic for Otsuka’s furniture and Pacific Furniture, worked as houseman at Coco Palms Resort, and as a delivery person at Koa Trading.

He was preceded in death by parents Rufo and Margaret Cardenas Sr.

He is survived by wife Noe Cardenas, children Michael (Kristina Iida) Cardenas, Michelle (Chad Alayvilla) Cardenas, Miulan (Ryan Contrades) Cardenas and Melanie (Ramon Ramos) Cardenas, grandchildren Ganen, Katherine, Kailani, Dana, Kainalu, Oliver, Kaylor and Orianna, siblings George (Mary) Cardenas, MaryJane (Benny) Alonzo, Bobby Cardenas and Angel (Cindy) Cardenas, and numerous aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of life is Saturday, Dec. 5, at Way of Salvation Church in Kapa‘a, with visitation at 9 a.m. followed by a service at 10:30 a.m.

Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Cecilia Diane Saflor Moore

Cecilia Diane Saflor Moore, 68, born July 6, 1952, originally from Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i passed on Nov 3, 2020, in West Palm Beach, Florida at JFK South Medical Heart Institute.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Juan “Johnny” Sr. and Esidra (Mangilit) Maglinti from Kaua‘i, Mother Natividad (Naty) Ligaya Maglinti Saflor from Las Vegas, Nevada originally from Kaua‘i, Father Florencio Sicam Saflor also from Kaua‘i, but originally from Buneg, Echague, Isabela, Philippines, Nephew Shiloh (Saflor) Simbre- Mederios.

She was survived by her loving husband John Patrick Moore of 35 years of loving marriage, her loving siblings Steven Saflor, Dennis (Victoria) Saflor, Lorene ( Robert Sr.) Saflor Texeira from Kaua‘i, Jeffrey Saflor from Tracy, California, Valerie (Pascual) Saflor Riofta, Fred Saflor and Kevin (Starlee) Saflor from Las Vegas, Nevada. Also survived by his loving family and siblings of West Palm Beach, Florida.

Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren, cousins and close friends .

She was secretary for the 1st Filipino Mayor Eduardo Malapit on the island of Kaua‘i. She worked for the State Dept of Health of Hawaii in O‘ahu. She was also a Restaurant Manager for Denny’s Restaurant in Royal Palm Beach, Florida.

She ran for Miss Kaua‘i Pageant in 1970, and was 1st runner up!!

She loved to do gardening and fishing which ran in the family, baking, cooking, playing lottery / scratchers hoping she win big 1 day!! Her favorite color was green!!

Cremation will be done by Cremation services by the sea at 1307 Central Terrace, Lake Worth, FL 33460

Celebration of life will be on Dec 5 @ Jupiter Beach Park Pavilion at 1375 Jupiter Beach Road, Jupiter, FL 33477

Haruko Sakai

Haruko Sakai, of Numila, was born in Kapa‘a on Jan. 23, 1922. She passed away on Nov. 23, 2020, at Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waimea. She was a retired employee of McBryde Sugar Company.

She was preceded in death by husband Tatsuo Sakai, son Sydney Sakai, parents Jira Takayashi and Usa Agena Miyashiro, and siblings Masa Agina and Amy Tamura.

She is survived by daughter Penny Dusenberry, son Colin Sakai, daughter-in-law Edith Sakai, grandchildren Garrick Dusenberry, Carla (Omi) Dusenberry, Liselle (Dynamite) Dusenberry-Lee, Sydette Sakai, Sean (Pauline) Sakai, Kelsi (O.J.) Holck, hanai granddaughters Kristine Nuding and Diana Barrett, great-grandchildren Devin (Heidi) Dusenberry, Taylen (Annie) Dusenberry, Daryl Dusenberry, Travis (Anastasia) Dusenberry, Kaina Dusenberry, Kanoe Carveiro, Kana‘i Carveiro, Kala‘e Chandler, Hoku (Tisha) Dusenberry-Lee, Kala Dusenberry-Lee, Lanakila Dusenberry-Lee, Shana (Jason) Koga, Justin Hamasaki, Sharla (Lauren) Dela Cruz, Shantell (Wally Rita II) Sakai, Sheldon Sakai, Colin Holck and Kyla Holck, great-great-grandchildren Delilah Dusenberry, Maple Dusenberry, Audreyana Dusenberry-Lee, Kaia Koga, Sianni Sakai, Wally Rita III and Waileia Rita, and sister Betty Konishi.

Private funeral services will be held at a later date
