Susan Lanette Uchida

Susan Lanette Uchida, 76, of Lihue, passed away on May 14, 2019, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. She was born in Modesto, California on Oct. 23, 1942, and retired as a professor and Business Education Division Chair with the University of Hawaii, Kauai Community College after 34 years. In 2008, the U.H Board of Regents awarded her the distinction of Emeritus Professor.

She was preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Betty Hoatson.

Susan is survived by her husband Alvin Uchida; brother Mark (Phyllis) Hoatson; sister Jennifer Hoatson both of California and one nephew Jeffery Hoatson.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019, at Lihue Christian Church Social Hall. Visitation with the family will be held at 11:30 a.m. with an informal luncheon and remembrance at noon.

Kauai Memorial Garden assisted the family with arrangements.

Maude Keiko Nalani Shigematsu

Maude Keiko Nalani Shigematsu, of Eleele, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Oct. 4, 2019, at the age of 47. Born May 27, 1972, to Danny and Carol Smith, she was preceded in death by her grandfather Ambrose Smith and grandmother Tsuruko Takamura.

She is survived by her husband Troy Shigematsu; sons, Trysen (Kimrah) Shigematsu Cosier, Theron (Melia Takakusagi), Tevin “Matsu”, Tresten “Maka”, Dylan Balaan; grandmother Yoshie Smith; sister U‘ilani (Nolan “Aba”) Albarado; brother Kawika (Keala Wann) Smith; father-in-law Ricky (Lori-Ann Cabebe) Shigematsu; mother-in-law Winona (Fenton) Lee; sister-in-law Traci (Matt ) Tafiti; brothers-in-law Kaulana (Allison Tamanaha) Lee, Keilan (Aimee) Shigematsu; nieces, Tavehi and Hina Tafiti, Hali‘a Albarado, Kilinahe Smith; nephews, Teva and Tautua Tafiti.

She worked as a special education teacher at Waimea High School.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Kekaha Boat House. Viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. service at 11 a.m. The family request casual attire and wear the color blue. Flowers and leis are welcomed.

Mervyn Tadashi Kimura

Mervyn Tadashi Kimura, 72, of Kalaheo, passed away at home on Oct. 19, 2019. He was born in Hanapepe, on June 2, 1947, and upon his professional retirement he worked with his wife at their family owned business, Kalaheo Flowers and Gardens.

He is preceded in death by his first wife Karen Cluff Kimura; parents Norman and Yaeko Kimura.

Mervyn is survived by his wife Carol Kimura; children, Jamiee (Yu) Ohki, Julie (Jarom) Brizzee, Brandon Kimura, Benjamin Kimura; 5 grandchildren, Caryn Ohki, Mari Brizzee, Maile Ohki, Ison Ohki, Luke Brizzee; sister Jan Humber; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019, at The Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Kalaheo Ward with viewing from 9 a.m. and services celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Dwayne Linn ‘Manny’ Fernandez

Dwayne Linn “Manny” Fernandez, age 67, of Kekaha, passed away on Oct. 5, 2019. Dwayne was born Sept. 11, 1952, in Honolulu, to Andres and Winona. He began his career at PMRF Barking Sands Naval Base with Crash Fire Rescue as a firefighter.

Dwayne is survived by his wife Kim (Ryan); 2 daughters, Ryann Mailani (Aaron), Paige Keana; his 2 grandchildren, Tyson Vaika, 8 (Mailani), Khloe Amaya, 3 (Paige); his mother Winona (Robert); sister Gigi (Charlie); sister Stacey (Steven); nephew Kiv (Rivera); niece Kira (Rivera); nephew Chase (Bohn); niece Kaylee (Fernandez); niece La’akela (Fernandez); uncle Pelane (Fernandez); countless family members of the Fernandez Clan, an immeasurable amount of friends, softball teammates, and many more.

Dwayne was preceded in passing by his father Andy; sister Maynette and brother Kiley.

Please join us in honoring and celebrating Dwayne’s remarkable life on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2018, at St. Raphael Church, 3011 Hapa Rd, in Koloa. Visitation will be from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m, with Mass at 10 a.m. and Ohana style lunch to follow. The family graciously requests casual or aloha attire and no flowers please, however, fresh leis are welcome.

Laurelio ‘Larry’ Ballesteros

Laurelio “Larry” Ballesteros, 92, of Lihue, passed away at Wilcox Medical Center on Sept. 27, 2019. He was born in Kahuku, Oahu on Feb. 11, 1927.

He is preceded in death by his wife Paula Ballesteros; parents Cayetano and Pilar Ballesteros; brothers, Alfredo, Florencio; daughter Cheryl Delos Santos.

Larry is survived by his brother Antonio Ballesteros; sister Consorcia Melchor; sons, Rudy (Betty) Ballesteros, Dennis (Pat) Pascual; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 11 great great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019, at Immaculate Conception Church with viewing from 10 a.m. and Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens along with a reception back at the church.
