WAILUA — The search is on for missing Ohio man Vladimir Sukhoparov, 58 after his belongings were found on the beach fronting Kauai Beach Resort on Sunday afternoon.
US Coast Guard responders started searching at 11:23 a.m. on Sunday after Kauai emergency services received a report from the Kauai Beach Resort security office, according to a Coast Guard news release.
Sector Honolulu watchstanders were notified and issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) Notice requesting mariners in the area to keep a sharp lookout for signs of distress.
The Dolphin Helicopter and RB-M crews were deployed to search the area. The crew of the Kittiwake is also en-route from Oahu to assist.
Other emergency responders joined the search on Sunday at about 3:10 p.m., according to Kauai County news release, after Kauai Beach Resort staff conducted their own search of the grounds and then called Kauai Police Department.
Monday, the search resumed. It’s a team effort between U.S. Coast Guard, Kauai Fire Department, Ocean Safety Bureau, KPD, and Rescue 3 aboard Air. Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 responded along with Engine 2 and Truck 2 from the Kapaa Fire Station. Lifeguards on a jet ski and Kauai police also joined the search along with the U.S. Coast Guard but as of Monday there was no sign of Sukhoparov
“Mr. Sukhoparov was last seen on a run wearing black swim trunks,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Leoan Concepcion, a Sector Honolulu watchstander with Coast Guard. “Some of his belongings were found on the beach and it is suspected he went for a swim.”
Monday morning rescuers observed two-to-three foot waves in the area, low water visibility, and a strong ripper current. Due to heavy rain with low visibility, the search was suspended at approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Sukhoparov should contact US Coast Guard at (808)-842-2600 or KPD Dispatch at 241-1711.
