A collection of water lilies from Rev. Kosen Ishikawa started out as a collection of buds, gradually opening to its full splendor during the Hanamatsuri service.

Ministers of the Kauai Buddhist Council include Rev. Kosen Ishikawa of the Koloa Jodo Mission, Lama Tashi Dundrup of the Kauai Dharma Center in Kapaa, Rev. Kohtoku Hirao of the Waimea Shingon Mission, Rev. Leonard Abeshima of the Waimea Shingon Mission, Shaku Arthur Kaufmann of the Lihue Hongwanji Mission, Rev. Koen Kikuchi of the Waimea Higashi Hongwanji, Rev. Tomo Hojo of the West Kauai Hongwanji Mission, and Rev. Mieko Majima of the Kapaa Hongwanji Mission celebrating Hanamatsui at the Lihue Hongwanji Mission.

Mahalo to the Kauai Buddhist Council on a great Hanamatsuri (celebrating births is a pretty universal practice, and did you realize the familiar “Happy Birthday” makes a good meditation piece?) service Sunday. The Lihue Hongwanji people (Jolene Ogle said she’s going) will be part of the Relay for Life (you can help by patronizing all the goodies from the participating teams) benefiting the American Cancer Society that will come up Saturday at the Hanapepe soccer fields.

Saturday is also the March for Babies (this used to be known as March of Dimes) that starts with registration from 6:30 a.m. at Lydgate Park with Juno Apalla (is Dr. Addison Bulosan going to be there?), and on the way to and from that event, Hawaii Foodbank, Kauai Branch is hosting a food collection day at six sites from the Princeville Center to Big Save, Waimea from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All that walking is good for you (find out more at the free diabetes awareness expo being presented at the Wilcox Hospital from 9 a.m. to noon where you can also get healthy snacks, and suggestions for a menu makeover for a healthier lifestyle — and, don’t forget prizes!), and Kukui Grove Center gets an early start on Easter with a new style egg hunt (nope, Golden Eggs are at the end) since they will have Earth Day during the Easter weekend.

Happy walking to all! Don’t forget, Monday is Tax Day!
