Saturday was not just the 17th annual Sequenced Transition to Education in the Public Schools Parent and Child Fair. It was Jeannie Odo Day (well deserved!!!) as proclaimed by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami (he said Odo was his first boss when he reached age to start working for pay) at Kukui Grove Center (congratulations to Buddahs Toy Box on your blessing!).

Jeannie was responsible for bringing the Special Olympics (Kauai Special Olympics has its annual track and field games coming up April 27!) program to Kauai in the ‘60s, and even took a team to the state swim meet where they came home with gold. And, the Kauai Special Olympics representation was probably still recovering from their color run so couldn’t be at the Parent and Child Fair.
Kudos to Johnny Gordines, Laurie Ho, Amy Chun and all those Kauai County Farm Bureau ohana who enjoyed a great Garden Fair in record-breaking high temperatures Saturday at Kauai Community College (how was that hot dog, Rhonda Liu?). Where were the beet seeds that are the featured fruit contest for the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair coming up during the Admission Day weekend in August?
The fair shared its appeal with the Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council Kauai District, which unfolded its annual Makahiki, where Commodore Larry Richardson had the Sea Scouts doing some of the Ancient Mariner games to the delight of young fair-goers who could add that experience to that of the perennially-favorite rope bridge.
Happy Hanamatsuri, Kauai (we say “Merry Christmas” to celebrate the birth of Jesus, so we can say “Happy Hanamatsuri” to celebrate the birth of the Buddha)!
