LIHUE — If you’re planning to attend the 14th annual Mayor’s Prayer Luncheon, don’t wait much longer to buy tickets or you might need a miracle to get in.
Already, more than 800 of about 1,000 tickets for the event at Kilohana Luau Pavilion have been sold. Since this is Mayor’s Bernard Carvalho Jr.’s final prayer luncheon, it’s doubtful any of the $25 tickets will remain when the doors open for the 9 a.m. March 3 gathering that goes until about 12:30 p.m.
Carvalho won’t be the keynote speaker, but will be the honorary host and is expected to give a special farewell message and sing, as well.
The main speaker will be Joe Onosai, who starred at University Laboratory School, and like the mayor, played football at the University of Hawaii. The 52-year-old is a former strongman competitor.
The Samoan tribal prince was drafted in 1987 by the National Football League Dallas Cowboys. A neck injury ended his career that same year.
The 6-4, 400-pound Onosai participated in the World’s Strongest Man competitions and made it to the finals in 1994 and 1995
Onosai has been a pastor at Destiny Christian Church on Oahu since 2011. He is also a motivational speaker and has previously visited Kauai and shared his message with churches.
“Pastor Joe is known throughout the world for his dedication to excellence,” says the church website. “He is a man after God’s heart, and is on fire for Christ.”
The theme of the luncheon is “Leaving a Legacy.” There will be prayer for different areas such as education, politics, family, tourism and government, as well as other speakers and prayer leaders, including Rep. Jimmy Tokioka, Pastor Michael Ancheta and Sgt. Ian Verasammy. There will also be music, hula, and food and drink.
For tickets, call Dely Sasaki, 246-0774.
No, no, no. The mayor should NOT be having a prayer luncheon. Kauai is a part of America, where we enjoy a wonderful thing called ‘separation of church and state’. Perhaps you’ve heard of it…
Carvalho and his cronies are the biggest thieves that Kauai has ever been associated with. His 10 years of public corruption on Kauai should be a historical learning lesson for the island and it’s residents.
Religion is a mental disease for delusional people praying to some fantasy “god” that never existed but in the minds of brain-washed individuals and of course corrupt power lustful politicians who take advantage of such to benefit themselves. That is the primary reason for the separation of church and State.
