WAILUA — Kapaa High School’s paddling teams dominated the fourth Kauai Interscholastic Federation regatta that returned to the Wailua River Saturday following a week’s break.
The Warrior junior varsity girls powered through their race despite going wide on the turn and getting beat by the Kauai squad, which hit the flag on target. But the Kapaa team dug deep and surged back into the lead on a paddle that stopped the clock at 4 minutes, 37.68 seconds. That was the first of four wins on the day.
The remaining two races belonged to Waimea JV teams, the JV Boys A team claiming the lead by nearly five seconds over Kapaa, and the JV mixed crew taking the race by more than seven seconds.
Warrior varsity teams dominated the day, taking all three races in the brisk morning air that was punctuated briefly by showers.
Kapaa remains undefeated in the JV girls and varsity mixed divisions, and following Saturday’s races sits at the top of the varsity girls and varsity boys classes. Waimea is undefeated in both the JV boys and mixed classes.
The next KIF regatta is Saturday at 10 a.m. on the Wailua River.
