Early morning fire damages eatery

KAPAA — A fire at a Kapaa restaurant caused a reported $100,000 in damages Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported.

Police and firefighters were dispatched to Sam’s Ocean View Restaurant and Bar shortly before 6:45 a.m. Police were first on scene and upon seeing smoke and flames coming from the restaurant, they immediately evacuated people from a hostel next door.

Crews from the Kaiakea and Kapaa fire stations arrived shortly afterwards and were able to contain the fire that was confined to the restaurant’s kitchen and attic and was fully extinguished shortly after 8 a.m.

In addition to fire and smoke damage, firefighters reported a broken water pipe that flooded the restaurant’s kitchen.

Fire inspectors estimate the damage to the structure and its contents to be roughly $100,000.

Kauai police closed Kuhio Highway for 30 minutes.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental, according to a county press release.
