HANAPEPE — Rumba, bachata and intermediate cha cha is on tap for the fourth quarter of the Kauai Ballroom Dance Club’s Hanapepe Chapter, which is holding registration tonight.
Classes also begin tonight and will continue through mid-December, every Tuesday from 7- 9 p.m. at the Hanapepe Neighborhood Center.
“This quarter we’re doing beginning Rumba, and that’s a good chance for beginners because you use it to all kinds of dance music,” said Glenda Tamashiro, secretary of the chapter.
Classes are open to all ages, and throughout the quarter there are opportunities for socials and other special dance-centered events.
The club’s dance classes are run through the County of Kauai and staffed by volunteers, Tamashiro said, which makes for people with passion teaching the steps to students.
“It’s part of our love for dancing, wanting to share it,” Tamashiro said.
Throughout the year, Kauai Ballroom Dance Club teaches dances broken up into four sessions with a little break in between each. Classes teach dances like the waltz and foxtrot, the Latin dances like tango and rumba, and the East Coast and West Coast swing dances.
“We added the bachata to our repertoire because it got quite popular a few years back and we wanted our people to know how to do that,” Tamashiro said.
Classes start with a review session from 6:30-7 p.m., when the teaching for the first dance starts. Students learn the first dance steps for about 40 minutes before moving on to the second dance.
At about 8:30, the third dance class starts on Tuesdays, and that is an intermediate class for those who are more experienced.
Cost to join is $3 per person for each class.
