FILE – In this April 13, 2017 file photo, Tony Sanborn becomes emotional after arriving at Cumberland County Courthouse in Portland, Maine. Sanborn was freed on bail after 27 years in prison for murder after his guilt was called into question by new evidence. Prosecutors said in court documents revealed in early October 2017 that Hope Cady, the sole witness to a brutal 1989 killing on a Portland waterfront, had recanted her 1992 trial testimony about witnessing Sanborn commit the crime because she was being hounded relentlessly by Sanborn’s defense team over a period of years. The case is being reviewed because of Cady’s testimony and questions about the conduct of police and prosecutors in the case. Sanborn is appealing his conviction.
