This year marks the 44th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between City and County of Honolulu and Seoul, Republic of Korea.
Mayor Frank Fasi proposed the idea that was adopted by the City Council with Resolution 102 on April 17, 1973, to be effective on May 20, 1973, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Korean immigration to Hawaii.
My uncle, Seoul Mayor Taek Shik Yang, along with Bong Kyun Kim, aka BK Kim, superintendent of the general, chief of Foreign Affairs Division of the Korean National Police, were in support of the sister-city proposal. The Advisory Council Seoul Metropolitan Government accepted and agreed to the proposal by the Mayor Yang on July 27, 1973.
There have been numerous cultural exchanges, good-will, tourism, trade and mutual respect between the two cities as I have witnessed living in Hawaii 43 years. Koreans have been a part of Hawaii since 1903 when the first immigrants arrived on USS Gaelic to work as laborers on the plantations fields. Today, their descendants have become the fabric of our community.
