HANAPEPE — Sherry Abigania Matthews, a homegrown mother from Waimea, said fighting cancer is a celebration of life.
Matthews, now stationed with the military in Montana, said the Relay for Life celebrates the triumphs of survivors, herself being tested as cancer-free in March.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life hosted hundreds of people and 41 teams to an overnight event at the Hanapepe soccer fields, adjacent to the Hanapepe Stadium.
Taking on a theme of Disney, the teams coordinated displays and costuming while offering specialty items which raise funds toward the $237,000 goal.
“Today is a special day because it is Robert ‘Bob’ McDermott’s birthday,” said Leona McDermott-Sa. “Robert is a two-time cancer survivor and it’s his birthday, today. The American Cancer Society celebrates birthdays.”
