Charles Kenji Kawakami
Charles Kenji Kawakami of Lihue, Hawaii passed away at the age of 75 on Dec. 3, 2016, at his residence. Born on October 22, 1941, in Waimea, Kauai, he was the President of Big Save and Menehune Food Mart Inc., a Veteran of the U.S. Army, and a former UH Regent and Chairman of the Hawai’i Food Industry Association.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Kashima Kawakami; father, H. S. Kawakami; mother, Tomo Nogami; brothers, George Kawakami, Edward Kawakami, and “Former Speaker of the State House of Representatives” Richard Kawakami; and sister, Emily Kawakami.
Charles is survived by his sons, Craig (Renee) Kawakami of Kauai, Douglas Kawakami of Kauai, and Derek (Monica) Kawakami of Kaua’; dogs, Renoir and Bonchance; grandchildren, Chanel, Mari, Chase, Christopher, and Hailee Kawakami; great-grandchild, Niko Kawakami-Frias; sisters, Gertrude Toma, and Edith Tan; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of His Life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10 , 2016, at the Lihue Christian Church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with services to follow.

Harold Allen Asuncion
Harold Allen Asuncion of Puhi, Kauai, passed away peacefully at his home on Nov. 26, 2016, at the age of 58. He was born on July 15, 1958, in Lihue. He was a haul cane truck driver for the Lihu’e Sugar Plantation for 21 years.
Preceded in death by his parents: Mildred and Sergio Asuncion. Grandparents: Henrietta Kapuniai & Julian Ibia, Eduardo Asuncion & Maria Gandeza.
Harold is survived by his wife of 35 years: Dorene Leialoha Asuncion. Daughters: Nani (Nalu) Asuncion, Maylynn (Taylor) Asuncion, Sons: Brandon Kava Asuncion, Chavis Ikaika Asuncion. Grandchildren: Kaiana, Kilinoe, Kawena Kai Ornellas, Zayden & Zailea Asuncion. Brothers: Sergio (Francine) Asuncion, Roland Asuncion, Darryl Asuncion, & Christopher Asuncion. Sisters: Leann (Randy) Watanabe, Carolyn Asuncion, & Pricilla Asuncion. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, aunties & uncle’s.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday Dec. 16, 2016, at Borthwick Koloa Mortuary. Viewing and visiting with family will start at 9 a.m. Services to celebrate life will start at 10 to 11:30 a.m. Cremation to follow.

Arsenia Legaspi Koerte
Arsenia Legaspi Koerte of Lihue passed away at Garden Isle Health Care on Nov. 14, 2016, at the age of 91. She was born in Penaranda Nueva, Ecija, Philippines on May 12, 1925, and retired from Kauai Surf as a Laundry Attendant.
Preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Koerte Sr., parents, Saturnino and Mamerta Legaspi and seven siblings.
Arsenia is survived by two daughters, Laverne (John Rego Jr.) Koerte, Gloria (Robert) Girald; three sons, Ernest (Carmen) Koerte Jr., Ralph (Rose) Koerte, Richard (Kathleen) Koerte; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, Dec. 19, 2016, at Lihue Lutheran Church with a private family visitation from 9:30 a.m.. Friends are invited to visit from 10 to 11 a.m. Services for the celebration of Arsenia’s life will begin at 11 a.m.

Joaquin Mokihana Ku Malama Jr.
Joaquin Mokihana Ku Malama Jr., formerly of Palolo, Oahu, passed away on Nov. 20, 2016, at the age of 75 at Kaua’i Care Center. Born on Feb. 21, 1941, in Kekaha, Hawaii, and was a lead auto mechanic at Hertz Rental Car.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joaquin Ku Malama Sr. and Ruth Ku Malama.
Joaquin is survived by his wife, Anita Fuertes Ku Malama of Waimea, Kauai; son, Joaquin Ku Malama III of Oahu; daughter, Jolynn Mae (Alfred) Souza of Oahu; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Stephen Malama of Waimea, Kauai; sister, Lolly Malama of Kekaha, Kauai; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at the St. Theresa Church in Kekaha on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at 9 a.m. with services to begin at 11 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be followed at the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor in Kekaha.

Janet Ballesteros of Hanamaulu passed away on Nov. 12, 2016, at the age of 53. She was born in Lihue on Jan. 1, 1963, and was an Administrative Assistant at Allied Machinery.
Preceded in death by her father, Alfredo R. Ballesteros.

Andria “Andi” Manaday of Hanamaulu passed away in Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Nov. 23, 2016, at the age of 78. She was born in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii on Dec. 17, 1937, and retired as a maintenance worker with Gay & Robinson.
Preceded in death by her parents, Carlos and Valentina Manaday; sisters, Pat Boro and Rosalia Fontanilla; brother, Martin Manaday.
Andi is survived by sisters, Felicidad Taguma of Oahu, Solidad Lagazo of Kekaha; Maximina (Albert) Carveiro of Kaumakani, brother, Steven (Nette) Manaday of Kapaa; longtime friend and classmate, Frances Satoe Bunao; numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall with viewing from 9to 10:30 a.m. and services celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens. Family requests purple or white attire.

Dwight Akita of Kalaheo, Hawaii passed away at the age of 72 on Nov. 27, 2016, at home. Born on Aug. 3, 1944, in Waimea, he was an U.S. Army Veteran and fireman.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey Akita; sons, Dwight (Lisa) Akita of Kalaheo, Kimo (Karen) Akita of Kalaheo, Kevin (Julie) Akita of Kalaheo; eight grandchildren, Sandra, Karlee, Seth, Kash, Hunter, Keoni, Teivyn, and Taeley; brothers, Dean (Youngie) Akita of California, Dana (Marjorie) Akita of Lawai, and Darick (Maxine) Akita of Kekaha; sister, Adelaide (Ray) Emura of Kekaha; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial Services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Kekaha on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. with services at 11 a.m.

Birgit Heinemann Landry of Kalaheo passed away at home on Nov. 27, 2016, at the age of 69. She was born in Wanfried, Germany on March 3, 1947, and was a self-employed bookkeeper.
Preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Roush and daughter, Julie Roush and father August J Camara.
Birgit is survived by her son, Brian Roush of the Hawaii Island; daughter, Nicole Landry of Idaho; mother, Elizabeth Camara of Kalaheo; brother, Wayne (Valerie) Camara of Kalaheo; sister, Brenda (Leonard) Carvalho of Lihue; numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life was held privately.
