Three women leaders honored

LIHUE — Three women will be recognized for their leadership and community service next week.

Over the years, teachers, business owners and volunteers have been celebrated for their efforts to inspire positive change on the Garden Isle.

Barbara Bennett, Regina Carvalho and Abigail Santos will be honored during the 8th Annual Na Wahine Alakai O Kauai dinner, hosted by the YWCA of Kauai.

Bennett owns For Kauai, which won the 2016 U.S. Small Business Administration award for media and journalism. A 24-year Kauai resident, Bennett has founded several projects and initiatives, including USTA Adult Tennis and Women in Business Roundtable.

Carvalho, a health professional, has been a registered nurse at Wilcox Memorial Hospital since 1992. She also serves on committees such as the Kauai Committee on the Status of Women, Kauai Economic Opportunity and Kauai Little League.

Santos and her husband, Frank, own No Ka Oi, one of the largest landscaping companies on the island, employing over 70 people. She won a SBA award and was named the 2016 Woman Entrepreneur of the Year from the National Association of Landscape Professionals. She was a director on the board of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce for seven years, and was honored as one of Kauai’s living treasures in 2014.

The event, which includes a dinner, silent auction and entertainment, will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10, at Smith’s Tropical Paradise. The doors open at 5 p.m. and festivities begin at 5:30 p.m.

Entertainment will be provided by Diane Rubio and Kumu Leina’ala Pavao Jardin.

To sponsor a table, reserve a seat or donate to the silent auction, contact YWCA at 245-5959.

All proceeds go to YWCA, and will aid its mission to end domestic violence and sexual assault.
