8 Kauai teams medal at states

Kohala, who fell at the hands of Bad Company on the first day of the tournament, climbed back to edge out the East Kauai Gents and claim the top spot of the A Division at the 41st annual Hawaii Senior Softball Tournament that wrapped up Thursday at Hanapepe Stadium.

Kauai teams fared well in the tournament that featured eight divisions and 63 teams playing over six fields at Hanapepe Stadium, and at the Kaumakani and Eleele Park.

Stephen Fujii, Kauai Senior Softball treasurer, said eight of the hosting Kauai teams finished in the top three of their divisions — the most exciting showdown coming in the E Division where the Rookies, under Coach Norvin Olivas, claimed first place by getting past the East Kauai Legends with Norm Holt in the coaches’ box.

Pat Baniaga, tournament coordinator, also coached the Barteks to first place honors in the D Division, and the Hanamaulu Hillsiders, coached by Peter Rayno, claimed top honors in the G Division at the Kaumakani Park.

The Ohana Rebels, coached by Russell McCluskey, fell to the Honmu Rockets for second place in the B Division.

Kawaihau, with coach Braddah Reitmeister, finished in third place for the F Division, and Ron Chittenden took Da Kruzers to a third-place finish in the H Division.
