Singing for Washington, D.C

The Kauai All-Island Band is hosting a free concert on Sunday to raise funds for a trip to Washington, D.C. to perform in front of thousands of people in the National Memorial Day Parade and Concert Series.

The fundraising concert is set for 3 p.m. at the Historic County Building lawn. Bring something to sit on and prepare for good tunes.

The band is made up of 64 students, from seventh-graders to college students. It will be the first band from Hawaii to participate in the National Memorial Day Parade.

“It has been very rewarding,” Kauai All-Island Band Director Sarah Tochiki said about the upcoming performance.

“To see the students collaborate with their peers and to watch the older students mentor the younger ones. We have been planning and fundraising for this trip for over a year now and I cannot believe it is almost here,” Tochiki said.

The band will offer three performances.

It will be in the National Memorial Day Concert Series and perform in front of the Air Force Memorial on Sunday, May 29. The National Memorial Day Parade is in the afternoon on Monday, May 30, Memorial Day. It will also be performing at the Gettysburg Visitor’s Center on June 1.

“The students and our wonderful band parents have worked so hard to make this happen. We are grateful to the entire Kauai community to helping us make it happen,” Tochiki added.
