LIHUE — Pastor Miles McPherson says the most rewarding part about sharing the word of God is watching how it affects people.
“I enjoy seeing people’s lives be transformed,” he said.
McPherson, who was drafted into the NFL as a defensive back for the San Diego Chargers in 1982, overcame drug addiction, earned a master’s degree and went on to start a thriving church.
He’ll be the keynote speaker at the 12th annual Mayor’s Prayer Luncheon on Feb. 27 hosted by Kauai Island Ministries at the Kilohana Luau Pavilion.
“I’m looking forward to sharing the gospel with the leadership community,” he said.
But if you want hear his story, you better hurry because more than 1,000 tickets have been sold and only a few are left.
The Mayor’s Prayer Luncheon has become one of the most popular events on Kauai, selling out each year.
Dely Sasaki of Kauai Island Ministries said she believes one reason for its success is that there is a strong unity among pastors here.
“They’re the ones that are encouraging their people to come,” she said Tuesday night. “It’s the unity among pastors working together, helping one another, encouraging one another.”
As well, she said it’s an opportunity for residents to hear people who wouldn’t normally come to Kauai, like McPherson.
As the addiction grew, McPherson found himself going into a “tailspin.” After a weekend-long cocaine binge during his second season with the Chargers, he said accepted Jesus into his life and stopped doing drugs.
He continued to play with the Chargers until 1985.
He received a masters of divinity degree, and in 2000, he started Rock Church in San Diego. Today, 20,000 people attend one of its five campuses. He has also published six books.
“We wanted a name that represented something strong and consistent, yet biblical and spiritual at the same time,” he said. “A rock is an immovable, solid object. And Jesus is the rock of our salvation, and 100 percent reliable and unchanging.”
