PUHI — “[title of show],” directed by Chris Alderete opens tonight at the Puhi Theatrical Playhouse.
The musical written by Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell is being put on by Kauai Community Players. It tells the story of Jeff and Hunter (played by Robert Carrasco and Ross Martineau), two struggling writers who hear about a new musical theater festival. The deadline for submissions is three weeks away. They decide to create something new with the help of their friends, Susan (Jennifer Downs) and Heidi (Jessika Montoya).
In the span of 90 minutes, they write and perform their show at the festival and learn lessons about themselves as people, friends and artists.
Alderete, who directed Hawaii Children Theatre’s “Next To Normal” last year, said the production is both humorous and inspiring.
“This is one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen,” Alderete said. “You will laugh so much it hurts.”
But he also loves it and wanted to direct it because of its inspirational message.
“Once you see the show, you understand what it is to create something, and you are inspired to do something yourself,” he said.
The cast has previous stage experience and some have performed together. They share a chemistry that will capture the audience, Alderete said.
Martineau saw “[title of show]” on Broadway.
“It’s just such special show,” he said. “A love letter to theater and people of the theater. I’m so glad we get to do it here.”
Carrasco called it “one of a kind.”
“You’ve never seen a show like this before. It’s just a pure night of fun.”
