Diverse was the term used by Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and Emiko Meyers, YWCA of Kauai board president, in describing the four Na Wahine Alakai O Kauai (Women Leaders of Kauai) award recipients.
Kaleo Carvalho said Mayor Bernard had to rush off to another function in Koloa, but he still had time to present special commendation certificates to Laola Lake-Aea, whom he described as a “surfer girl,” Carol Ann Davis, an artist and cancer survivor, Donna Apisa, a real estate professional, and Antonette “Toni” Torres, who is a nurse.
Dr. Dileep Bal said Toni is not just a nurse — she’s a general because even the Tropic Care Hawaii colonels listen when Toni speaks.
Congratulations to all the well-deserving recipients (Carol Ann said Laola used to do makeup during the days she did senior portraits), and kudos to Renae Hamilton, Emiko Meyers and all the YWCA staff on hosting a fabulous event.
OK, off to check on the Lihue Baseball League’s 11th Da Bash tournament, and the qualifiers for the Junior World golf.
