The public is invited to a pre-screening and a talk story session with the director and producer of “Rise of the Wahine,” a historical sports documentary film on the University of Hawaii Wahine Volleyball team.
“Every generation has underdogs which alter the course of history,” said Edie Ignacio, vice chair of the Kauai County Committee on the Status of Women. “During the early 1970s, these unlikely women from Hawaii broke through social restrictions and helped change sports in America forever.”
Coming on the heels of an inspirational address by U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Regina Carvalho, chair of the Committee on the Status of Women, said the free screening and talk story will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Moikeha Building, Room 2A and 2B.
In addition to completed clips from the “Rise of the Wahine” film which will be released later this summer, there will be clips including the Patsy Mink-endorsed Title IX.
Co-authored and introduced by Sen. Birch Bayh, Title IX was renamed the Patsy Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act in 2002.
Title IX states, in part, that no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
Following the clips, people have an opportunity to meet the two local directors who will share behind-the-scenes stories about the creating the documentary.
