SAN FRANCISCO – Nils Schuhmann won at both doubles and singles, but the University of Hawai‘i Warrior tennis team lost to University of San Francisco on Wednesday at the Olympic Club. UH opens its road trip with a loss to fall to 5-10 while the Dons improve to 9-5-1.
After USF won the doubles point, the singles results went back and forth with the Dons never letting the Warriors take the lead. The match came down to No. 1 singles where Jared Spiker, playing again at the one, lost to Thai Tu in two close sets, 7-5, 6-4.
The Dons earned the doubles point at the three as Tu and Germain Bahri topped Spiker and David Schuster, 8-5. UH had evened doubles play when Schuhmann and Carter Lam won their No. 2 flight match.
Schuhmann evened the match with his straight-set win at No. 5 singles. After Chas Okamoto dropped his No. 4 match to Nils Skajaa, Danilo Casanova rallied from a set down to beat Richard Bucalem, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 to tie the score for a second time. Dmytro Kovalyov tied the match for a third time with his 6-4, 6-2 win at the three before Spiker dropped the deciding point.
UH next travels north to take on University of California, Davis Saturday. First serve is set for 2 p.m. PT (11 a.m. HT).
