The men of Kukui‘ula Outrigger Canoe Club located in Po‘ipu placed third in the Masters 40’s division of the Moloka‘i Hoe outrigger canoe race on Sunday.
This is the second time in recent years that Kukui‘ula has earned medals in the Masters 40’s division. In 2009, the Kukui‘ula Masters men placed second.
Repeat members of the crew in 2012 were Kalani Vierra, Jonathan Parrish and Mac McDonald. This year they were joined by Arlen Williamson, Laleo Kinimaka, Greg Wright, James Alana, Andreas Grechi and Marshall MacCready.
The Moloka‘i Hoe is the world championship of outrigger canoe paddling, a race of 41 miles across the Kaiwi Channel from Moloka‘i to O‘ahu.
Other Kaua‘i crews included top 25 finishers Hanalei Canoe Club in 15th place and Pu‘uwai Canoe Club in 23rd place and Na Mololokama, who entered crews in three age divisions. West Kaua‘i Canoe club also entered an open division crew.
