KAPA‘A — Waimea brought its high powered offense to the Kapa‘a High School gym Tuesday and once again proved why the Menehune are in first place. The Menehune took down the Warriors 25-17, 26-24 and 25-18 as they rolled to victory in straight sets.
The first set would have Waimea coming out solid, jumping on the Warriors early with a 5-0 lead off of a Mariyah Oliver kill and a Talia Young ace. Kapa‘a would attempt to battle back off of solid net play from Maile Tuttle and Justice Brown-Kimura, who played well for the Warriors for the entirety of the match and got the score as close as 9-8 in favor of Waimea.
The Menehune would respond quickly taking nine of the next 11 points, which included a Kawena Warren block, a Leiana Alejandro kill and a string of Warriors unforced errors, which put the Menehune up 19-11.
Kapa‘a’s Sara Agoot did her part in attempting to bring the Warriors back adding a kill and an ace to her stat sheet, however in the end it was an Oliver kill which ended any hope of a Warriors come back finishing off the set 25-17.
Waimea would begin the second set where it left off scoring the first four points unanswered. Of the first four points the Menehune would score three of them via ace. Kapa‘a would respond with a four-point streak of its own thank in part to a pair of kills by Brown-Kimura and Kaylee Silva.
The Menehune appeared to be poised to run away with set as it lead 21-16, but not one to roll over, the Warriors showed a tenacious ability to come back. Brown-Kimura was once again leading the charge at the net with help from Alexis Stogner who had a wonderful night setting up her teammates. Kapa‘a would battle back to an even 24-24, unfortunately for Kapa‘a, a Warriors unforced error and a Warren block would propel the Menehune to a 2-0 lead moving into the third set.
The third and final set would have a different feel to it as the Warriors would streak out to an early lead, with Jade Andaya, Kai‘imi Moniz and Adarah Fujita all scoring points for Kapa‘a helping the team to a 8-4 lead early in the set.
Just as it seemed Kapa‘a would run away with the set leading 17-10, Warren and Alejandro would help the Menehune tie the set at 18 a piece. Waimea did as the team has done all season, which is capitalize on its opponents mistakes. A string of Kapa‘a errors would help the Menehune take the lead and once again an ace from Alejandro and kill from Warren would give Waimea the 25-18 win in the set and the victory in straight sets.
The Warriors got a solid service night from Brainee Cabacungan.
