NAWILIWILI — Papa‘au confirmed its top standing in the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Horse and Pony Series by finishing first in both the horse, big boat, and pony, or Topper, races Thursday.
The solid win in 10 to 15-knot winds out of the north-northeast, almost identical to the previous week’s conditions, gave Louis Abrams and his crew an overall 16 points to capture top honors in the PHRF Open and PHRF Monohull categories.
On the water, Papa‘au finished second overall in the big boat race as Fast Company’s Olson 30 slipped ahead on a 26:52 elapsed sail to the Express 27’s 26:48 elapsed sail.
But the PHRF correction put Papa‘au up 25:39 PHRF to Fast Company’s 26:27 PHRF, setting the stage for Papa‘au to stay ahead in the pony phase for the win.
Fast Company, second in both the horse and pony phases, ended second with 21 points overall, staying a point ahead of Bonjolea in the PHRF Open and Monohull classes.
Bonjolea, finishing fourth overall on a 29:11 elapsed sail, corrected to 28:04 PHRF, just three seconds shy of OZone, but a third finish in the pony phase kept her ahead of OZone who finished with an series-total of 25 points for fourth place.
OZone, on the Thursday finale, crossed on a 27:58 elapsed sail and corrected to 28:01 PHRF, three seconds faster than Bonjolea, but settled for a fourth finish in the pony phase.
Although finishing out of the money in the PHRF classes, she topped the Club class with an overall 17 points for the series followed by OZone collecting 28 points overall for a trophy.
Speedy rounded out the fleet, crossing on a 33:33 elapsed sail, correcting to 33:36 PHRF and its pony coming in fifth for a series-total of 36 points.
Next on the NYC Race Calendar is the Channel Crossing, an O‘ahu-to-Kaua‘i race where the finishers will cross the Nawiliwili Harbor finish line on Aug. 10, followed by a post-race party at the NYC Clubhouse, Aug. 11.
The next Shoreline Series will be Aug. 16 when the three-race Wahine Series starts. In that series, a wahine needs to be at the wheel for the race.
