LIHU‘E — State officials announced Tuesday that 90 percent of the 200-acre fire that has scorched Miloli‘i Ridge for more than a week should be completely contained by the end of the day. The fire began May 28 at about 2 p.m.
“Department of Land and Natural Resources personnel tonight expect to call 100 percent contained a week-old wildfire on state land in the Na Pali-Kona Forest Reserve on Miloli‘i Ridge, located 6 miles southwest of Koke‘e State Park,” announced a state press release Tuesday evening.
A 50-member crew of DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife teams from Kaua‘i, Maui and O‘ahu continued to work Tuesday on putting out stubborn hot spots and monitor the fire perimeter for smoke, according to DLNR.
No helicopters were used in Tuesday’s firefighting efforts. Two DLNR enforcement officers provided security.
“Concentrated ground and air efforts and mild weather have helped fire crews turn the corner on this fire and conditions continue to improve,” DLNR Chair William Aila Jr. said in the release.
Two state wildfire trucks with mobile water pump units were still on scene Tuesday. An estimated $247,000 has been expended on state firefighting costs, of which the bulk has gone for helicopter air time.
Firefighting crews from O‘ahu and Maui are expected to demobilize to their home islands today.
