For a locally made drink with a whole lot of flavor, Kaua‘i Kombucha teas are catching on among the artisan drink set.
Kombucha is a fermented, organic tea-based drink that some say originated in China and some say originated in Japan hundreds of years ago.
It’s considered a health tonic because of the yeast and good-for-you bacteria, organic acids, including something called glucuronic acid, and other ingredients that makers say promotes energy and good health.
At island health food stores, specialty shops and farmers markets, you can find small and wine bottle-size editions of Kaua‘i Kombucha in ginger, grape and Kaua‘i Trilogy combinations such as tangerine, lemon and ginger and orange, lemon and ginger.
In Lihu’e, you can find Kaua‘i Kombucha at Vim ‘n Vigor at 3-3122 Kuhio Highway #A9. Kaua‘i Kombucha shares refrigerated shelf space with another favorite of Vim ‘n Vigor customers — Coca Vida, a locally made coconut water.
