Terry Lilley, a marine biologist from Hanalei, shot these pictures while filming a high-definition video Saturday at Hanalei. He was diving under these waves, doing a coral survey and spear fishing. ‘The surf in Kaua‘i can come up very quickly because it is so deep offshore. This can catch the tourist off guard and make it difficult for our lifeguards to keep people safe,’ Lilley writes. ‘The surf in Kaua‘i can go from flat to 10 feet in just a few short hours. In California, due to the continental shelf, it take a full day for the surf to come up.’
