LIHU‘E — Halau from all the Hawaiian Islands competed at the 27th annual Kaua‘i Mokihana Festival hula competition last week at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort Jasmine ballroom.
“It was standing room only during the ‘Awana hula performances, which is always the most popular hula event when the Royal Court also attends,” said festival coordinator Maka Herrod in a news release.
Kaua‘i Mokihana Festival awarded over $16,000 in prizes and trophies.
Dancing hula to the song “Kahana,” Mckenna Pascua won first place Solo Opio Wahine category.
Pascua is with Halau Hula O Hali’ilieo, which is based on Kaua‘i and led by Kumu Hula Doric Yaris.
Kimo Miranda of Halau Ha‘a Keo O Kinohi wins first place in the Solo Opio Kane performing to “Ia ‘Oe E ka La E Aloha Nei”.
Hailing from Hilo, Hawai’i, this halau is led by Kumu Hula Paul Neves.
Raeceen Anuenue Woolford, dancing to “Ho’olono ‘ia Aku Ho’i Kaua‘i,” won Miss Mokihana Hula Kahiko along with a trophy and $2,200 cash awards.
From O‘ahu, Halau Hi‘iakainamakalehua is led by Na Kumu Hula Robert Ke’ane Ka’upu and Lono Padilla.
