Allen Ka‘auwai
Allen Isaiah Ka‘auwai died July 22, 2011, at his home in Fremont, Calif. Born on March 12, 1946, in Honolulu, O‘ahu, he spent his childhood days in Waipouli with his grandparents, Isaiah and Daisy Ka‘auwai.
He was a graduate of The Kamehameha Schools’ Class of 1964 and served in the U.S. Marines for three years. Allen started his working career in the airline industry with Pan American Airlines for 26 years and later transferred his career with Singapore Airlines where he worked for 17 years. He also started an International Softball Tournament in 1978 and called it “The Pan American Softball Tournament” later renaming it the “United Airlines Softball Tournament,” taking the teams and their families to Tahiti, California and Hawai‘i until May 2011 when he was diagnosed with cancer of the kidney and remained home until his death.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Isaiah Kaluna and Daisy Mary Ka‘auwai of Waipouli; and mother, Abbie Nabeshima of Anahola.
He is also survived by his sons, David of Hilo and Kevin of Fremont; daughter, Kristen (John) Hassett and their children, Keoni, Keely, Palani and Leimana Hassett of Lahaina, Maui; brothers, John (Barbara) William and Bert (BlazeAnn) Ka‘auwai of Kaua‘i, Vernon (Fran) Ka‘auwai of California, Douglas Nabeshima of Kona and Mark (Maydelle) Nabeshima of Aiea; sisters, Henrietta (Robert) Gonsalves, Annette Ka‘auwai and Linda Iwamoto of Kaua‘i, Doreen Nabeshima of Honolulu and LaurieAnn (James) Avilla of Kaua‘i; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at the First Hawaiian Church in Kapa‘a on Saturday, Aug. 13. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. with service to follow.
Bernadine Enrique
Bernadine “Taga” Kukana Yuen Lan Ho Enrique of Anahola died Aug. 6, 2011, at home at age 67.
Born on O‘ahu on April 30, 1944, she retired as a teacher from Kapa‘a High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Enrique; grandson, Keli‘i Enrique; and sister, Cathy Carvalho.
She is survived by seven children, Joseph (Mary) Enrique II, JoDine “Kealoha” Enrique, Joseph Paul Enrique, JoWell Enrique, Joseph S Ah Luke Enrique, JoRina Enrique Holland, Justyce Enrique; mother, Priscilla Ho; brothers, Moses “Koko” (Virgie) Ho, Kenneth “Dudie” Ho, Kevin Ho; sisters, Moana DeMello, Sui Lan Kepa, Kim Lan (Bert) Tasaka, Yuk Lan (Gary) Young, Ah Lan Ho; 13 grandchildren, Jocelyn, Joseph, Jonah, Josiah, Pikake, Jovi, Chavez, Jimmy, LeiAloha, Jonay, Jaylee, Katelynn and Cody; three great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Kalihiwai and Taylin; numerous, aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, at Anahola Baptist Church with visitation at 9 a.m. and services beginning at 10 a.m. with a potluck to follow from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Scattering of her ashes will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Waimanalo Bay on O‘ahu.
Kenneth Gray
Kenneth Douglas Gray Sr. died May 28, 2011, in Manila, Philippines. Born Feb. 14, 1954, in Newport, Ore., he was retired and a former manager at Syngenta Seeds.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Priscilla Faye Gray.
He is survived by his father, William (Prima) Gray; mother, Ora Mae Hutchison; seven children, Samuel (Kristl) Gray; Susanna (David) Taylor; Daniel Gray; Michael (Melissa) Gray; Douglas Gray; Kenneth Gray Jr.; Kenberley Gray; siblings, Bill Gray; Theresa Gray; Barb (Leon) McDonald; Kim (Holly) Hutchison; Neva (Mike) Demaris; Pearl (Ray) Hettwer; Alan Gray; Rosella (Larry) Bailey; Gretel Gray; Grayson Gray and seven grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 14, at MacArthur Park.
