Hundreds of Kaua‘i residents greeted the crews of seven Polynesian canoes that sailed more than two months in the Pacific Ocean before arriving in Hanalei Wednesday.
The canoes arrived in Hanalei Bay Wednesday around 12:30 p.m., after leaving New Zealand on April 19. The canoes — which sail using ancient Polynesian navigation practices and no modern instruments — have touched all main Hawaiian Islands, and will next set sail for San Francisco, Calif., before making their way to Rapa Nui, the Marquesas Islands and Tahiti.
