A 10.2-pound ulua was the big winner for Jensen Mabini in the Kapa‘a Eagles Shoreline Fishing Tournament over the weekend, said Akala Aiwohi, president of the Kapa‘a Eagles Football Association.
Mabini was the sole entrant in the Age 13-17 category and the 10.2-pound catch was over the limit for Papio so earned the top spot in ulua.
But that was not the biggest fish snared in the fundraiser for the Kapa‘a football association which operates under the auspices of the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League.
Jon Nakamura tagged a 33-pound ulua for first place in the 18 and Over Ulua division, followed by Blake Moura fielding a fish weighing in at 26.6 pounds. Kirk Mabini rounded out the leaderboard for that class with an entry weighing in at 18.6 pounds.
Kaiona Nakamura was the sole entrant in the Papio, Age 5-12 division.
Melvin Aki topped the O‘io, Age 18 and Over division with an entry that tipped the scale at 2.6 pounds and Kaimi Nabeshima followed with a 1.6-pound entry.
Nabeshima did not stop at o‘io, taking top honors in the Moi, Age 18 and Over division. His moi tipped the scale at 1.4 pounds, just .2 pounds heavier than Melvin Aki’s entry that weighed in at 1.2 pounds.
Ramah Wong topped the Reef Fish, Ages 5-12 division, followed by Xailea Iopa, Cash Searle, Cade Halemanu and Alexus McCarthy.
Aiwohi said this was the first tournament in what they hope will be an annual event and the Kapa‘a Eagles are looking forward to another in 2011.
