PO‘IPU — Top-seeded Chas Okamoto of Kapa‘a will be facing No. 2 seed Jeremy Randolf-Flagg of Island School for the top spot in the Boys Singles, and top-seeded Sarah Kukino of Kaua‘i will face fellow Raider Shay Orial, No. 3 seed, for the top spot in the Girls Singles, this morning at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts.
The finals will wrap up the two-day 2010 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis qualifying tournament hosted by Kapa‘a High School to determine berths for the Carlsmith Ball/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Boys and Girls Tennis State Championships, May 6-8 at the Holua Tennis Center and the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort in Kona.
The KIF was originally scheduled to host the state meet, but after discovering that there was an insufficient number of courts, the decision was made by the HHSAA to relocate the meet to Kona.
The top-seeded team in the Boys Doubles bracket is gone after being upset by the No. 4-seeded pair of Ryan Bieker and B.J. Kai of Kaua‘i. Sam Dunham and Logan Domingo of Island School had the top seed before being edged out by Bieker and Kai, 6-2, 6-3.
Bieker and Kai will be facing their fellow Raider teammates, Otis Llewellyn and Jerik Centeno, unseeded in the tournament, and advancing after upsetting the No. 2-seeded team of Mathew Kanna and Chris Flynn, also of Kaua‘i.
On the Girls Doubles court, the top-seeded team of Alexis Valdez and Makena McCluskey will be up against the No. 4-seeded pair of Kaylie Nakamura and Jazzerrie Taeza, both teams wearing the green of Kapa‘a High School in a quarter-final match.
The No. 3-seeded pair of Jasmine Ikeda and Jennifer Grady will play the No. 2 seed, Madison Duarte and Meghan Perius of Island School in the other half of the quarterfinals.
Okamoto earned his spot in the semis after defeating No. 4 seed Andrew Dutton of Waimea, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
Prior to that, Okamoto opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kaleo Hauata of Waimea while Dutton opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ryan Lopez of Kapa‘a to advance to the quarterfinals.
Randolf-Flagg advanced to the semis on a three-set win over No. 3 seed Ryan Perez of Island School, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Prior to that, Perez opened with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mark Razalan of Waimea and Randolf-Flagg opened with a 6-1, 6-1 win over August Trumm of Kapa‘a.
Kukino earned her spot in the semis with a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 4 seed Brittney Barreira of Waimea. Prior to that, Kukino was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Mikalah Sullivan of Island School while Barreira advanced after defeating fellow Menehune Dessa Rentrop, a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Joy Claypoole of Island School, 6-1, 6-2.
No. 3 seed Orial advanced to the semis after getting past No. 2 seed Jade Cano of Waimea, 7-5, 6-0. Earlier in the day, Orial was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Kaulana Hannenberg of Island School while Cano advanced following a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Lauren Spears of Island School.
There is no charge to watch the action, which is anticipated to start at around 8 a.m. at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts.
