LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i leadoff hitter Randee Layosa conked an inside-the-park home run to set the pace for Kaua‘i’s 3-0 win over Kapa‘a in the chill of Isenberg Park, Wednesday night.
Layosa took the second pitch from Kapa‘a and lofted the sphere to deep right field for the opening run.
Second in the lineup and playing first base, Melia Aki singled to get aboard, advancing to second base on a Kapa‘a error, then crossed on an RBI single from No. 3 hitter Tia Obrero.
Catcher Carly Matsumoto notched the third run for Kaua‘i in the fifth inning after singling to get aboard.
Kaua‘i picked up its win on eight hits and pitcher Naja Pungan threw a three-hitter for the win against the Lady Warriors. She also finished by striking out seven batters and walking just one.
Kapa‘a pitching gave up three runs on eight hits with no strikeouts while walking six.
Kapa‘a’s Marley Bukoski notched two of the Warrior hits, both singles with Pricilla Lutz getting the third single.
Kaua‘i’s bats were led by Layosa’s big leadoff bang followed by Aki, Obrero, Adriana Medeiros, Matsumoto, Ka‘a Laamea and Waileia Kanealii all singling.
The win sets the stage for a big showdown Saturday when the Raiders travel to the Waimea Canyon Park for a doubleheader against the Menehune starting at 10 a.m.
With an upset loss at the hands of the Warriors, Kaua‘i needs a sweep to stay alive while the Menehune, reeling from their 8-7 loss to the Raiders at home, are looking for redemption.
There is no entry fee to view the games, and according to Menehune spectators, there will be a Waimea Softball Boosters food booth available.
