PUHI — The Red Raiders didn’t have to travel far, but they did manage to pick up a road victory with a four-set win over a very game Voyagers squad, Wednesday night at the Wilcox Gym at Island School.
Kaua‘i came away with a 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18 victory to move to 3-0 in the second round, while Island continues to battle but is still looking for its first win of the season.
Tyren Hasegawa again contributed in all facets for the Raiders, leading the team with 10 kills and added eight assists. He also had six blocks and three aces.
Austine Acorda had a team-high 10 assists and two kills.
Lucas Riley had seven kills, three blocks and two digs, while Silas Gerardo added five kills and two digs.
Austin Simao finished the night with nine kills, four blocks and three aces.
Kevin Reyes had a match-high nine digs.
Island setter Logan Domingo tallied 24 assists for the Voyagers, with Brennan Wortmann the beneficiary on a number of them, finishing with 13 kills.
J-Riley Louis had eight kills and three blocks. Sam Dunham had seven kills, three digs and two blocks.
Brandon Taylor added six blocks and five kills, while Canaan Higa had four kills and two blocks.
The opening set was even the entire way through with neither team taking more than a two-point lead. Tied up at 22-22, Hasegawa put up back-to-back aces. With one set point at 24-23, an Island kill attempt found the net and Kaua‘i took the 1-0 lead.
In the second set, the Raiders built up a big lead, using a 10-3 run to go up 18-9. The Voyagers used a 6-1 run to get back to within four at 19-15, then another 5-1 run cut it to two at 22-20. Kaua‘i survived the charge and Cody Morden picked a good time for two of his four kills in the match, finishing off each of the second set’s final two points to take a 2-0 lead.
The third set played out like the first, with neither team running away. Tied 16-16, Island used a 7-1 run to build up a 23-17 lead. With five set points in hand at 24-19, Domingo spiked instead of set on the second hit to make it a 2-1 match.
The Raiders started the fourth on a mission and grabbed a 7-1 lead. They held that advantage for much of the set before the Voyagers rallied to within two at 18-16.
But two Simao aces helped Kaua‘i finish off the match and remain unscathed in the second round as an Island shot sailed wide on match point.
In varsity action at Waimea High School, the Menehune came away with a 3-1 win over the Kapa‘a Warriors, 18-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-23.
Kapa‘a, the first-round champion, falls to 1-2 in the second round, while Waimea moves to 2-1.
In junior varsity action, the Kaua‘i Red Raiders notched a 2-0 win over the Voyagers, 25-16, 25-12, then also winning the exhibition set, 25-17.
Waimea JV pulled out a three-set win, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19 over Kapa‘a.
The boys are back on the floor Saturday when the Raiders will host the Warriors at Kapa‘a High School and the Menehune take on the Voyagers in Waimea. Both matches will see JV hit the court at 5 p.m., followed by varsity no earlier than 6:30 p.m.
