WAILUA — Maui musician Kimo Clark and Kaua‘i artist Tim Fabiana team up to present the FAME Festival of Kaua‘i, celebrating visual arts and music in an effort to inspire and support Kaua‘i youth. From 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at Kaua‘i Beach Resort, four bands and over a dozen artists join forces for the concert whose acronym stands for Fresh Art Music Expo, FAME. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. in the Jasmine Ballroom.
Headlining are O‘ahu Hoku Award winner, 10 Feet and The Throwdowns from Maui. Celebrating their debut independent recording, “Don’t Slow Down,” The Throwdowns are giving a free copy of the CD to all ticket-holders.
Touted by some listens as island punk, bass player Clark prefers to describe their style as “sexy rock.”
“We don’t know what genre we belong in so we made up our own,” he said. “Our style has rock elements, drum loops and live samples — it’s a whole other dimension in music.”
The Throwdowns have opened for NOFX, 311 and Candlebox, and also won X-92.5 FM’s 2008, “The Battle of the Bands.” Opening the show are Kaua‘i bands Juss Diss, (island reggae) and Skunkdog (rock-reggae).
As well as music, event organizers Clark and Fabiana invited photographers, designers and painters to exhibit their work in the space outside the Jasmine Ballroom.
“A lot of younger artists work in digital imagery which lends itself to T-shirts,” he said. “The third tier of the festival is networking. We are reaching out to surf shops and gallery owners in the hope to create a networking opportunity for artists. We want it to be a fun place to come meet these artists.”
There will be a silent auction as well with all proceeds being donated to the three Kaua‘i public high schools.
“We asked ourselves, ‘what’s taking the biggest hit in this economy?’ and that’s the school system,” Clark said. “We wanted to do something that gives back to Kaua‘i as a community event.”
Silent-auction items include certificates for Merriman’s and Little Tsunami Tattoo; clothing and original art; rooms at Kaua‘i Beach Resort and rounds of golf.
As the organizer, Fabiana is passionate about building bridges between artists, consumers and businesses. The way he described FAME Festival is as “something solid and true creating relationships” that will benefit all in the future.
“This is Kaua‘i helping Kaua‘i,” he said.
Designed as a forum to showcase a variety of artistic expression, Clark and Fabiana see the festival as becoming an annual event where visual artists and musicians join for a night of expression.
Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Tickets are available at the following outlets: Kaua‘i Beach Resort; Deja Vu Underground; Deja Vu Surf Outlet; Hanalei Surf Co.; Scotty’s Music; and Smileys Local Grinds.
