If the breezy trend continues, fans should be in for another exciting race, Thursday as the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Gene Wells Memorial Series continues with Race No. 5.
Fast Company, an Olson 30, picked up its fourth consecutive first place victory in blowing and wet conditions last Thursday at the Nawiliwili Harbor.
With Jim Saylor at the stick, the Olson 30 finished about a minute ahead of OZone, another Olson 30, for first place honors on a 1:02.40 elapsed sail (1:02:46 PHRF).
OZone corrected to a PHRF 1:04:00 following its elapsed sail of 1:03.54.
Papa‘au, finishing almost five minutes back of OZone (1:08:17) jumped to third place after the PHRF correction (1:05:22) followed by Lelele, a Wells 30, in fourth (1:09:36 elapsed, 1:09:23 PHRF).
Lelele actually finished the race in fifth, nine seconds back of Coyote, a C&C 38, who crossed the line on a 1:09:24 elapsed time. But the PHRF adjustment pushed her into fifth by seven seconds at 1:09:30 compared to Lelele’s 1:09:23.
Bonjolea (1:19:11 elapsed, 1:16:08 PHRF) and Kalewa, a 50-foot cat, (1:08:17 elapsed, 1:25:21 PHRF) rounded out the fleet, respectively, after Malihini, the 35-foot cat, did not finish.
Kalewa actually tied with Papa‘au on the elapsed time, crossing at the same time, but was relegated to eighth place following the PHRF adjustment.
Coyote topped the Club class following its Club adjustment to 1:02:01 over Speedy, an Olson 30 that corrected to 1:03:05 Club).
Mavis Aiu, the publicity chair of the NYC, said the public is invited to view the Wells Series, Race No. 5 from the jetty wall area of Nawiliwili Harbor. First flags fly at 5 p.m. for the 3.6-mile course.
