‘OMA‘O — The mountains of ‘Oma‘o, the wind, the showers and the mud are highly unlikely places to meet up with roller derby queens, but Kanoe Ahuna, aka Suki 2U, had some of the Garden Island Renegade Rollerz selling shave ice, pop and coffee as a fundraiser.
“We have our first bout coming up March 13,” Ahuna said. “It’ll start at 7 p.m. against a combined O‘ahu/Maui team at the rink in Kapa‘a.”
The combined team is known as the Pacific Roller Derby and will be taking on the G.I. Renegade Rollerz from 7 to 9 p.m. with Mike Lopez doing the Bout DJ duties, according to a Facebook page on the G.I. Renegade Rollerz.
Following the event, a post-race party will take place at the Lava Lounge starting at 9 p.m. and featuring SonDaOne, D.J. HuSun and drink specials all around.
Admission to the roller derby bout is a $5 donation and will feature not only the derby action but include a halftime show by GIRRANIMALS, or a Junior Derby Scrimmage.
The G.I. Renegade Rollerz is an all-women flat track roller derby league formed by committed, loyal team players in October, 2009.
The league is dedicated to providing an opportunity for women athletes to achieve their maximum potential, athletically, intellectually, and socially through the sport of roller derby, states its Facebook Web site.
Through intensive training, competitive activities and community involvement, the G.I. Renegade Rollerz strive to embody specific core values including hard work, motivation, perservance, respect for cultural diversity and continuous personal development.
“My husband Dan is our coach,” Suki said. “It’s not like coaching football, or playing football, but he loves it.”
The G.I. Renegade Rollerz practice Mondays from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Kapa‘a inline hockey rink located next to the tennis courts at the New Kapa‘a Town Park.
