LIHU‘E — Torrey Santiago and Malcolm Carter picked up state qualifying jumps following the first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying track meet, Friday at Vidinha Stadium.
Santiago, a student athlete from Waimea High School, finished tops in the Boys Long Jump with a leap of 21’ 3.25.” That jump was well above the state 2009 qualifying standard of 20’10.25.”
Carter, another Menehune student athlete, finished second in that event below Santiago, his leap of 20’ 5.5” less than an inch from the 20’6.25” consideration standard.
But Carter went on to top the Boys Triple Jump on a 43’ 1.50” distance, bettering the state qualifying standard of 42’2.25.”
Santiago finished second in that event, also earning a state qualifying jump of 42’11.5.”
Treston Brede of Kapa‘a High School finished third on a 38’10” leap. But Brede’s efforts in the Boys High Jump topped that event with a leap of 5’8,” just two inches short of the state consideration standard of 5’10.”
“He was jumping in just one-inch increments,” said Richard Matsumoto, Kaua‘i’s track coach and in charge of supervising that event. “He had a good day, and should be able to qualify in that event.”
Reanna Javinar, a returning Kaua‘i student athlete, earned a state consideration jump on a 33’6.5” leap in the Girls Triple Jump, bettering the state consideration standard of 32’ and falling just two inches short of the state qualifying standard of 33’ 8.”
Jayme Jacinto and Cassandra Owen, both Waimea student athletes, came up tied for top honors in the Girls High Jump with jumps of 4’6.” That height is two inches short of the state consideration standard of 4’8.”
With the inclusion of the field events, Kaua‘i High School girls topped the scoring with 191 points followed by Waimea at 161 and Kapa‘a at 67 points.
Kapa‘a High School boys finished tops at 146.75 points followed by Kaua‘i at 115.75, Waimea at 112.75 and Island School at 28.75 points.
The KIF qualifying meets continue Friday starting at 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
