LIHU‘E — In the days following its Jan. 15 press release announcing the change in the path alignment, the county acknowledged a pair of errors in the statements that were printed the following day in The Garden Island story titled “Mayor shifting path from beach to highway.”
Halau Kanikapahuolohi‘au was not present at the Jan. 15 meeting referenced in the release, according to an e-mail from the mayor’s executive assistant, Beth Tokioka.
Upon Kumu Hula Pohaku Nishimitsu’s passing, the halau ceased entirely. Leadership for three halau were present at the meeting, including Kumu Hula Puna Dawson, Kumu Hula Nathan Kalama and Kumu Hula Kehaulani Kekua, who informed Tokioka of the errors.
Also, the spelling of Kuhio Highway mistakenly included an ‘okina between the “i” and the “o,” Kekua told Tokioka. Prince Kuhio’s name is simply with the kahako over the u and o, with the word kuhi‘o translating to “stand and pass gas,” Kekua said.
“This is a major insult to our ali‘i, Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole and to the use of ‘olelo Hawai‘i,” Kekua wrote.
Tokioka asked that the corrections be printed with her “sincere apology.”
