LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Red Raiders varsity girls soccer team picked up a 5-1 win over the Waimea Lady Menehune, Saturday on their home turf at Vidinha Stadium.
Anolani Coon put in one of her two goals within the game’s first minute, but Waimea’s Vakeesha Lagazo responded in kind with a goal in the sixth minute to even the score.
Dayna Fujii’s score in the 14th minute proved to be the game-winner for Kaua‘i, which has had Waimea’s number to this point in the season.
The game remained at 2-1 for the rest of the first half and into the early stages of the second, when the Raiders got three goals within an eight-minute period from Coon, Lisa Tangalin and Malia Kagawa.
Kaua‘i is off Wednesday, while the Lady Menehune will face the Kapa‘a Lady Warriors at 4:30 p.m. at Hanapepe Stadium.
The Kapa‘a Warriors boys varsity squad notched a 3-0 win over Island in early Saturday action at Island School.
The Warriors got two goals from Kaisen Carrillo and one score from Taylor Langstaff.
Island’s leading goal scorer, Michael Chamberlain, was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the match.
In the other varsity boys matchup, Waimea and Kaua‘i played to a 1-1 tie.
Torrey Santiago added to his impressive season stats to this point with the game’s first goal in the 23rd minute of the first half.
Kaua‘i came back and managed to get the equalizer from Grant Basquez in the 55th minute of play.
Neither team could find the net for the game-winner.
In the first game of the day at Vidinha, Waimea and Kaua‘i JV girls played to a 0-0 tie.
“They played us really well, today,” said Kevin Devitt, Kaua‘i girls JV coach. “We had our chances, the girls were knocking, but Waimea kept the door shut.”
His team is off until Saturday, while the Waimea and Kapa‘a girls JV teams will mix it up at 4:30 p.m., Thursday at Hanapepe Stadium.
The JV boys game amounted to a 2-1 win for the Waimea Menehune.
Isaac Fierro and Stuart Pereira were credited with the scores for Waimea. Bradley Becksma found the net for Kaua‘i.
