Editor’s note: From now through Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true. Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Warm clothes for rainy season
Sandy has been homeless for several years. She has been unable to find affordable rental. She has only been able to find part-time work. She could really use warm clothing for the winter months when it rains a lot. (G76)
Bus passes would help
Jerry has been homeless on and off for years now. He has a substance abuse problem, but he has been clean for six months now. Thanks to the courts he was ordered to participate in a program and graduated. He still is unable to drive for two more years so bus passes would really help him get to work and his AA/NA meetings. (G77)
A sleeping bag for warmth
Sarah is disabled and has a HUD voucher. She is unable to find a rental. She really needs someone to rent her a place that is wheelchair accessible. She could use some new warm clothes and a sleeping bag. (G78)
Home for the holidays
Mark was homeless for over three years. He just moved into a house and is living on limited disability income. He has no living family so he will have no Christmas unless someone finds it in their heart to help him enjoy Christmas. He really could use bus passes since he is unable to drive because of his disability. (G79)
Some toys for Christmas
Michelle and her husband Kevin and their 4 children Kristie (9), Candice (12), Cassandra (14) and Joe (13) are homeless. They are presently staying at Mana‘olana Emergency Homeless Shelter at night time. The family is hoping to settle into Transitional Housing. The family uses a small car which hardly fits the six of them. A van would be appreciated if somebody can spare one. It would also be nice for the children to have new clothes and some toys for Christmas. (G80)
New pair of shoes
Todd is a homeless and disabled. He has fixed income. Due to his disability, he cannot work. Todd stays in his car during the day and stays at night in the Homeless Shelter. He completed a housing application and was hoping to get in any time. A new pair of shoes and pants would be nice as Christmas presents to Todd. (G81)
