LIHU‘E — Paul Du Clos won the singles title in the Mens 70 division at the Po‘ipu Kai senior tennis tournament Oct. 31, notching a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Gene Turner in the finals.
The event featured mens and womens draws in both singles and doubles, producing a turnout that included Kaua‘i, O‘ahu and Mainland players.
The team of Bernie Duarte and Jeff Aceret took home the Mens 45 doubles crown, while Marilyn Char and Tammy Quinlan won the Womens 45 doubles title with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rosemary Smythe and Hannah Sirois. Char and Quinlan took home the Womens 50 doubles title, as well.
Stan Schiller was a 6-0, 6-1 winner for the Mens 50 singles championship, while also capturing the Mens 45 singles title.
The team of Alan Miyashiro and Marilyn Char were victorious in a hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 match to obtain the Mixed 50 doubles title.
Andres Libed proved his all-around game by winning the Mens 55 singles championship with a 6-1, 6-0 win, then won the Mens 55 doubles title with Aggi Birnbaum in straight sets. Birnbaum was also a two-time champ, as he won the Mens 60 singles final by a 6-0,
6-0 score.
Eric Seitz was the top finisher in the Mens 65 singles bracket, picking up a 6-2,
6-3 win over Bill Foxhauen.
The match of the event may have been the Mens 65 doubles final, where the team of Bob Weiner and Jim Flipert came away with a
6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3) win over Seitz and Charlie Yokomoto.
John Somerville and Harry Brown became champions of the Mens 70 doubles division in another tight match, besting Chet Hunt and Klaus Keil 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4. Harriet Somerville was also a winner in the Womens 70 doubles bracket, teaming up with Pat Chaffin for a 6-4, 6-1 win.
