LIHU‘E — Alex Ching fired a four-under par 68 to lead the University of San Diego to its second straight team victory at the Kaua‘i Collegiate Invitational, Wednesday at the Puakea Golf Course.
Ching’s 68 was the best round of the day and he went on to place second in the individualist awards with a three-day total of 206 (69-69-68), just a stroke back of top individual Joseph Harrison’s 11-under par 205 (68-68-69).
San Diego completed the sweep by getting Jason Shano the third place on a scorecard playoff over San Diego’s Ben Murray. Both golfers finished with a three-day total of 208.
In the victory, San Diego finished with a 34-under par 830 (276-550), increasing its lead from 23 strokes, Tuesday.
James Madison University, led by Jhonny Montano’s final-round 70, finished in second place with a three-day total of 859 (286-573), the only other team to finish with an under-par total over three days of play.
With the 70, Montano finished with a 213 (70-73-70), along with teammate Michael Meisenzahl, who parred the final round. Mike Smith also parred to finish with a three-day total of 212 (71-69-72) to lead the James Madison effort.
The host University of Hawai‘i men’s golf team finished in fourth with a three-day total of 869, led by T.J. Kua ending the final round with a one-under par 71. Kamden Brake also shot a 71 in the final round. Kua finished with a three-day total of 209 (67-71-71) and Brake ended with a 222 (75-76-71).
Joining Kua, one of two Kaua‘i boys on the Hawai‘i team, Corey Oride finished with a 76 for a three-day total of 229 (77-76-76).
